Skylights - Leeds Beckett SU - Leeds - 30/09/2023

All Skylights aren’t we? Well for the 1000 or so in the superb venue of Leeds Beckett SU, Yorkshire's very own Indie powerhouse band, blasted their way through their set with a swagger and confidence that definitely answered the question with a huge….. YES.

A gig a year in the making, Skylights definitely gave a show that will live long in the memory.

The band hailing from Yorkshire, a band who not so long ago reformed, have gained one of the most loyal of fan bases I have ever seen. This is heavily evident on social media but most definitely so on the night. Fans repeatedly chanting the band’s name – football stadium-esque…. flags, banners and Skylights attire was present on mass and gave everyone the opportunity to meet and greet fellow Skylights comrades from all over the country.

Before the main event, two support bands took to the stage in the form of Pretty Mafia and The Lilacs. Both of these bands gave energetic and polished performances and pleased the many who took the time to watch them, most having perhaps not seen them before but also the significant pockets of fans they brought along themselves.

The energy was superb in the venue, adrenalin building and both bands added to that…. huge credit to them.

Standout tunes for me included Seen it all and Vicarage Road from the Lilacs and I am sure all in attendance hope that both bands go onto big things.

In that special period between the set finish of the last support band and the headliner , the 30 minutes or so for last minute beers, tactical toilet breaks and the excitement to build further, the bar area was a frenzy of noise and anticipation. The bar staff on occasion looked shell-shocked at the superb natured support.

Showtime. The band entered the stage to a massive noise… a welcome that was hugely deserved.

And it began. All the tracks expected, larger and louder than ever with a mix of the old favourites and some new tunes to add. Pyros, streamers, smoke machines and pretty much anything else that could fit on the stage did so. The band threw everything at it and the crowd gleefully lapped it up.

It was an epic sight. Four lads living most people’s dream with a crowd living it right there with them.

The lads themselves, Rob (Lead Singer), Turnbull (Lead Guitar) Jonny (Bass) and Myles (Drums) all looked like they were having the time of their lives. Rob prowled the stage with an assured and confident swagger, flashy parka and powerful lyrics. Turnbull appeared high on life, riffs aplenty and revving up the crowd at every opportunity. Jonny a prominent figure, stylishly guiding the tunes and beats and Myles battering his kit to bits and loving his part playing the mammoth anthems that the band smash out.

The set was fast, hard hitting and pounded its way through…. each track attempting to top the one before…. all leading up to the final song – Darkness Falls. A song that that truly deserves its place as the set finale and has everyone singing (shouting) along to every word.

It was a superb gig. It had all the elements needed to be just that. And what was hugely evident from this night is that fans really do make the night. The ability to share with the band occasions like this are magical. And with the following like they do, Skylights will continue to grow and will always have the backing of their ultra-loyal fans right there with them. ASAW

Please take the chance to check out the sites of the bands and give them all a listen and support them. It will be worth it. LGR x
